Rangers fans must not overreact to beating Kilmarnock

Of course it was nice to finally win a league game at Ibrox for the first time in five months. Over five months, in fact. The relief was absolutely palpable among Rangers fans during Rangers v Kilmarnock.

A Word of Caution

This is where Ibrox Noise holds a little bit of caution, to say the least. You will know, as regulars do, that we are slightly sceptical, borderline cynical on this site. We’ve seen this movie a thousand times before. Consequently, we are not reacting the way that other Rangers fans are after beating Kilmarnock at Ibrox.

No Cause for Celebration

It is a ridiculous notion to suggest that Rangers fans should celebrate a win. Unfortunately, we have. This is not Ibrox Noise telling other fans what to do. They are their own people. But Ibrox Noise will not get involved in dancing in the streets over beating an extremely average Kilmarnock side at Ibrox.

Back in the olden days, this would have been beyond standard and unremarkable, to say the least. The reaction yesterday, which continues on to Monday, is as if Rangers have just won the league.

The Bigger Picture

We know we are very, very bad. And yes, it is nice to finally arrest that terrible run of not winning in the league at Ibrox. It was a dire, dire run and a terrible, terrible spell of form. But to react as if we have won the World Cup after beating Killie really is a bit of a sign about how far we have sunk recently.

Ibrox Noise is not reading a single thing into that result. We also beat Livingston after all. Consequently, this team is capable of winning the odd match here and there against utterly terrible opposition. But the real challenges lie ahead.

If Rangers manage to get some wins in the next two (big) matches, including of course against Celtic, which in itself is a big shot, then maybe a tiny, tiny little corner might have been turned. But we have an EFL manager and an EFL team. Winning one single match makes absolutely no difference. Winning several and keeping on doing it does.

The Verdict

Despite the win in Rangers v Kilmarnock we will hold the champagne on ice until then.
