With just three points separating the two sides, the Bundesliga weekend opener presents a major opportunity for either Ole Werner’s Leipzig or Christian Ilzer’s Hoffenheim in the race for a top-four finish.
While not in poor form, Leipzig have struggled for consistency since the turn of the year, failing to build sustained momentum and often missing opportunities to capitalise on dropped points elsewhere. They head into matchday 27 sitting 5th on 47 points.
Their Champions League hopes suffered a setback last time out with a narrow 1-0 defeat away to direct rivals Stuttgart. In a game lacking attacking quality from both sides, Leipzig in particular looked blunt in the final third, with Antonio Nusa, Rômulo and Yan Diomande struggling to make an impact. Deniz Undav’s second-half strike ultimately proved decisive, ending Leipzig’s five-game unbeaten run.
Werner has urged his side to seize the moment:
“It's a special game, as it's against a direct competitor in the final phase of the season. Everyone knows the table and knows it's tight. We want to seize the opportunity we have tomorrow with all our might.”
Home form remains a concern for Die Roten Bullen, who have won just two of their last seven Bundesliga matches at the Red Bull Arena. However, they can take confidence from their strong Friday night record, having never lost a Bundesliga fixture played at home on a Friday.
Hoffenheim have enjoyed an excellent campaign under Christian Ilzer, earning widespread praise for their performances. However, a slight dip in form - with just two wins from their last five - has allowed rivals to close the gap. They enter the weekend 3rd on 50 points.
That inconsistency was evident in their most recent outing, a frustrating 1-1 draw at home to Wolfsburg. Despite dominating possession (68%) and registering 21 shots, Hoffenheim failed to make their superiority count. Grischa Prömel’s late equaliser salvaged a point after Konstantinos Koulierakis had given Wolfsburg the lead.
Ilzer expects more from his side on Friday:
“We need to get better in all aspects of the game. It will be a more open game. The opposition are very strong in possession and have some outstanding individual players. We need moments where we play really good football.”
Their away form offers encouragement, with three wins from their last five league matches on the road. However, their record in Friday fixtures is far less convincing, having failed to win any of their last seven Bundesliga games played on a Friday.
RB Leipzig: Assan Ouédraogo, Peter Gulácsi and Kosta Nedeljković are unavailable for Friday’s fixture.
Hoffenheim: Leon Avdullahu has picked up a muscle injury likely to sideline him for a few weeks at least. Valentin Gendrey, Koki Machida and Adam Hložek also remain out.
Hoffenheim claimed a 3-1 victory in the reverse fixture at the PreZero Arena in November and will be aiming to complete a first league double over Leipzig since the 2017/18 season. However, Leipzig are unbeaten in their last nine home meetings with Hoffenheim, underlining their historical dominance in this fixture on home soil.
RB Leipzig (4-3-3): Vandevoordt (GK) - Baku, Orbán, Lukeba, Raum - Schlager, Seiwald, Baumgartner - Diomande, Rômulo, Nusa Hoffenheim (4-3-3): Baumann (GK) - Coufal, Hranač, Kabak, Bernardo - Kramarić, Burger, Prömel - Prass, Asllani, Toure
