The future of Antonio Rudiger is one of the hottest topics at Real Madrid. The veteran defender has been a top player for the club since arriving in 2022, but his contract expires at the end of the current season.

The German international suffered an injury in early September, and still needs some time before returning to action and competing for a place in Xabi Alonso’s starting lineup.

Real Madrid not convinced about renewing Rudiger

Now, according to Defensa Central, as things stand, Real Madrid have serious doubts about renewing Rudiger.

Rudiger has been a key player for the team, is loved in the locker room, and known for giving everything on the pitch. But he is also nearing 33 years old, is on a high salary, and the team has not suffered significantly in his absence.

Xabi Alonso currently favors Eder Militao and Dean Huijsen as his central defensive pairing and it is difficult at the moment to imagine Rudiger reclaiming a guaranteed starting role.

There is also Raul Asencio as an additional option, and the club’s plan includes signing a new centre-back next summer, with Dayot Upamecano and Ibrahima Konate among the possibilities.

With academy players such as Joan Martinez and Diego Aguado also pushing for opportunities, it would not be surprising if Real Madrid decide against renewing Rudiger’s contract.

Rudiger wishes to stay

Despite the situation, Rudiger’s desire is to continue at Real Madrid. He has already turned down previous offers to leave, especially from Saudi Arabia, who tried hard to lure him away.

The 32-year-old ace is fully aware of the doubts surrounding him. The club has not hidden its concerns, and the player knows he must convince them if he wants to remain.

Whether he renews or leaves in the summer will depend heavily on his performance in 2026 – his fitness, whether he avoids further injuries, and whether he can return to full form.
