Real Madrid secured a crucial 3-0 victory over Manchester City at the Santiago Bernabeu last night in the UEFA Champions League.

Along with the positive result, though, the Merengues were greeted with some fresh injury woes as defender Ferland Mendy suffered a new fitness problem and had to be taken off.

Hamstring injury for Mendy

Providing an update on the situation, journalist Abraham Romero of El Mundo reports that Mendy has suffered a hamstring injury which will keep him out of action for around one week.

The 30-year-old left-back has endured an injury-riddled season, having missed a large chunk of the campaign already due to multiple fitness problems.

In fact, he made his first appearance under Alvaro Arbeloa last week, when he started against Celta Vigo in the absence of Alvaro Carreras, where he impressed heavily.

With Carreras getting injured, Mendy started against Manchester City as well, but lasted for only 47 minutes before being taken off.

Talking about his condition after the game, Arbeloa said: “He’s injured, yes. It doesn’t look good. I appreciate his effort. We took a risk by playing him in two consecutive games after such a long layoff.

“I took the risk and I thank him for it. It’s wonderful to be able to coach him. It’s too early to say, but it’s unlikely he’ll be fit for Tuesday.”

Now, it has emerged that he has a hamstring injury, which is likely to sideline him for a week, meaning he will miss the La Liga clash against Elche, as well as the second-leg tie vs Manchester City as well.

More scans are scheduled for tomorrow, which will provide a clearer image of the injury and its severity. For now, though, he is expected to be out for around a week.

With Carreras also set to miss the upcoming matches, Fran Garcia appears poised to start for Real Madrid against Elche as well as Manchester City.
