The end of Dani Carvajal’s era at Real Madrid is forcing the club into one of its most important defensive rebuilds in years.

Notably, Saturday’s clash against Athletic Club at the Santiago Bernabeu is expected to mark Carvajal’s farewell appearance, closing the chapter on one of the most successful full-backs in the club’s modern history.

Real Madrid know replacing a player like Carvajal cannot be solved with just one signing.

Although Trent Alexander-Arnold has already established himself as the club’s first-choice option, there is a growing feeling that another specialist defender is still required

The coaching staff and board believe the squad lacks depth in that position, which is why Real Madrid have created an extensive shortlist of right-backs with very different profiles.

According to Ok Diario, one of the names attracting attention is Denzel Dumfries from Inter Milan, who would cost €25 million.

Mourinho values Dumfries’ profile

It must be noted that the Dutch international represents a very different type of full-back compared to Alexander-Arnold.

Where the Englishman thrives through creativity, passing range and technical quality, Dumfries brings raw intensity, power and directness.

The interest in Dumfries appears closely connected to Jose Mourinho and the type of squad he wants to build at Real Madrid.

Throughout his managerial career, Mourinho has consistently valued aggressive and physically dominant players, and Dumfries fits that description.

The Inter defender is known for his constant forward runs, aerial strength and ability to impact high-pressure matches physically.

His aggressive style would offer Real Madrid a very different tactical option on the right flank, particularly in games where energy and attacking depth become essential.

Not a feasible option

At the same time, though, there are concerns surrounding the operation for multiple reasons.

This is because, technically, Dumfries is not considered as refined as some of the other names under consideration.

That could create problems in matches where Real Madrid dominate possession against deep defensive blocks and require more precision in build-up play.

Furthermore, his age is another factor being analysed carefully. At 30 years old, Dumfries would not represent a long-term solution in the same way younger targets might.

Still, his reported €25 million valuation makes him a relatively affordable option in a difficult market, but once again, there is no final decision in place as Real Madrid are also exploring other market avenues.
