One of the very few positives for Real Madrid from their game against RCD Mallorca this past weekend was the return to action of Eder Militao.

The game ended in a 2-1 loss for Los Blancos, but the Brazilian international made his comeback after four months out of action and even scored his team’s only goal on the afternoon.

While Militao’s return is a major boost for Real Madrid heading into the business end of the season, it could spell trouble for one of their current starters.

Dean Huijsen’s spot at risk

Indeed, according to AS, with Militao back to full fitness and Antonio Rudiger performing at his best, Dean Huijsen is under the threat of losing his place in the Real Madrid starting lineup.

As things stand, it seems premature for the Brazilian international to start tomorrow against Bayern Munich. But the defender is very much expected to be reinstated to the XI come the second leg in the Allianz Arena next week.

With the Brazilian back, and the authority Rudiger has been showing in recent weeks, Huijsen finds himself in a difficult position.

Huijsen was one of Real Madrid’s most notable signings last summer. The club paid €58 million to AFC Bournemouth to reinforce the centre-back, an area that has been heavily affected in recent times by injuries to Militao himself, as well as to David Alaba and Rudiger.

Real Madrid are convinced they have made the right decision with the Spanish international, but also that he must be given time to adapt properly and continue developing at the highest level.

Huijsen has had a season full of ups and downs. His start was spectacular, but the match against Atletico Madrid the Riyadh Air Metropolitano, the 5-2 defeat, marked a turning point for him.

The 20-year-old centre-back entered a slump, which worsened due to a soleus injury, although he has managed to recover in recent matches, coinciding with the UCL Round-of-16 tie won against Manchester City.

But now, the return of Militao further complicates his chances of starting in the remainder of the season.
