Real Madrid are poised to reveal their first summer signing immediately after the 7 June presidential vote, according to Diario AS. A €9m buyback for Nico Paz from Como is lined up and would be confirmed regardless of the winner.
Florentino Perez called the snap election after criticism of his leadership over the past two years. He had been expected to go unchallenged, but Enrique Riquelme will now run against him at the polls. Perez is the heavy favourite.
The process has slowed summer planning. After Alvaro Arbeloa confirmed he would not continue in the job, the club have yet to name a replacement. Benfica manager Jose Mourinho has reportedly signed a three-year contract.
The delay in completing it has increased the cost. If Perez prevails, Mourinho will be confirmed as the new manager shortly after.
Paz, an Argentina international and this season’s Serie A midfielder of the year, has long been linked with a return. The club have been in regular touch with him, outlining their plans.
Riquelme has said he already has two international stars ready to sign if he wins. Perez said this week that signings would come as they usually do.
Beyond Paz, Real Madrid are expected to target a midfielder and a centre-back, and beyond that little is clear. Endrick Felipe will also return from his loan at Olympique Lyon.
