According to Glorioso 1904, Real Madrid has formally notified Benfica that it will trigger José Mourinho’s release clause and pay 15 million euros. The notice was sent in writing as the Portuguese coach’s return to the Santiago Bernabéu appears increasingly close.

The move comes only days after a campaign video linked to Florentino Pérez showed Mourinho in a Real Madrid shirt. The footage was interpreted as a clear sign of the president’s desire to bring him back.

After the video surfaced, Mourinho contacted Benfica to make clear he had not taken part in its production and that the images were generated using artificial intelligence.

Benfica have been planning for succession for several weeks. Marco Silva has been chosen to take charge of the first team and there is a full agreement on a contract for two seasons, with an option of one more.

At Real Madrid, Pérez is intensifying his campaign to remain president. He has promised to announce the first major signing for next season on Thursday and has set out a project built on having the best players and continuing to win.
