It was a long and sad night at the Santiago Bernabeu, as Real Madrid’s 0-1 defeat to Getafe left the stadium frustrated and restless, and when the final whistle blew, no player stepped forward to face the media.

Only one voice emerged and that too came online.

As such, Thibaut Courtois chose to speak through his official Instagram account after the defeat.

The Belgian goalkeeper, who had no chance of stopping Martín Satriano’s powerful strike in the 39th minute, admitted the result hurt.

“The defeat at home is a big disappointment. We must turn it around and react. #HalaMadrid,” wrote Courtois.

While the message was indeed a short one, it carried a lot of weight.

With the rest of the squad remaining silent, Courtois once again took responsibility to address the situation, much as he had done several times in the past.

An unpleasant Bernabeu

Meanwhile, at Santiago Bernabeu, the mood had already turned before the final whistle was blown.

Fans began leaving their seats early, sensing that a comeback was unlikely.

Whistles rang out across the ground, directed at players, the coach and even at president Florentino Perez

Such was the situation that the club anthem was played at full volume, but it could not completely drown out the anger.

As reported before, the frustration had been building throughout the match. Early boos followed a substitution decision involving Arbeloa and Thiago Pitarch.

Later, players like Dean Huijsen also became targets of the crowd’s disappointment.

Bye-bye La Liga?

Meanwhile, the defeat now leaves Real Madrid four points behind league leaders Barcelona.

While mathematically there is still time, the gap feels heavier given the current form of both sides.

March has only just begun, but this result may prove decisive. For Madrid to turn things around, unity will be required, exactly what Courtois called for.
