Régis Le Bris believes José Fonte’s recent elite playing career and European know-how will add a different edge to Sunderland’s backroom team. According to Sunderland Echo, he expects the appointment to complement rather than disrupt established routines.

Fonte began work on Wearside on Monday after ending his playing career at the end of last season. The former Southampton and Portugal defender featured at multiple major international tournaments and in numerous European campaigns at club level.

Le Bris was satisfied with the coaching structure that carried Sunderland through the run-in of 2026/27 and into Europa League qualification. He views Fonte’s arrival as an addition to that balance, not a change of course.

He sees Fonte as a different profile in the group, a high-level former professional with strong standards and deep knowledge of European football. Le Bris says the aim is to add without disturbing workflow, and he hopes the balance is maintained.

Fonte will work alongside Michael Proctor and Alessandro Barcherini, plus James Brayne for set pieces, Isidre Ramón Madir as Chief Analyst, and Neil Cutler for goalkeeping.

Florent Ghisolfi said Fonte brings top-level experience, energy and leadership, and that those qualities will add value as Sunderland look to push forward in the Premier League and in Europe.
