Régis Le Bris says José Fonte’s European know-how and recent playing career will bring a new dimension to Sunderland’s backroom. He believes the addition will complement, not disrupt, the balance that underpinned Europa League qualification last season.

According to Sunderland Echo, Fonte started work on Monday after ending his playing career at the end of last season. The former Southampton and Portugal defender has featured at major international tournaments and in multiple European club campaigns.

Le Bris said the staff found a strong rhythm over the closing months of 2026/27, and that Fonte offers a different profile, high standards and deep knowledge of European football. He hopes the group will find the right balance with him in place.

Fonte will work alongside Michael Proctor and Alessandro Barcherini, with James Brayne on set pieces, Isidre Ramón Madir as chief analyst and Neil Cutler overseeing goalkeepers.

Ghisolfi said Fonte arrives with top-level experience, energy and strong leadership, qualities he believes will add value as Sunderland push forward in the Premier League and in Europe.
