In goal, Melker Ellborg could continue. Roefs has rejoined after World Cup duty and is likely to be eased back, so this could be another chance for Ellborg to impress.

Nordi Mukiele returned to right back against Liverpool, a position in which he has been central to Sunderland's success. It would be a major surprise if he did not start there on opening day and beyond.

Dan Ballard made an excellent return from ankle surgery against Liverpool, and will look to build on that start in New Jersey.

With Omar Alderete due back on Wearside next month after the World Cup, Luke O'Nien has a great chance to stake a claim for regular minutes on this tour. He has made a very solid start to date.
