Sunderland face Leeds United in New Jersey on Friday at 12.30am BST, the next test on their US tour. According to Sunderland Echo, Régis Le Bris's side are stepping up preparations and a likely XI is taking shape.

In goal, Melker Ellborg could start. Roefs is back with the squad after World Cup duties but is likely to be eased in, so this could be another chance for Ellborg to impress.

At right back, Nordi Mukiele returned to that role against Liverpool, where he has been central to Sunderland's success. It would be a major surprise if he were not selected there on opening day and beyond.

Centre back Dan Ballard made an excellent return from ankle surgery against Liverpool. He will look to build on that strong start to pre-season in New Jersey.

Alongside him, Luke O'Nien can further stake a claim while Omar Alderete is due back on Wearside next month after the World Cup. O'Nien has made a very solid start on tour.

This friendly should hand Le Bris another stern assessment before the new campaign.
