Manchester City’s forward line has rarely lacked talent under Pep Guardiola, yet even within a squad defined by technical excellence and tactical discipline, individual uncertainty can surface. Reports emerging via TeamTalk suggest that Belgian winger Jeremy Doku is approaching a pivotal moment in his Manchester City career, with summer talks planned to clarify his long term role at the club.
Doku arrived at the Etihad Stadium in 2023 from Rennes for £55.5 million, a signing that promised electrifying pace and fearless dribbling. His early displays captured the imagination of supporters who crave moments of improvisation within Guardiola’s carefully choreographed system.
According to the report, “TEAMtalk understands that the Manchester City winger is planning to seek assurances about his long term role at the club.”
At 23 years old, the Belgian international sits at a crossroads familiar to many attacking players in Guardiola’s squads. Opportunities exist, but competition is relentless.
City’s recruitment has intensified that pressure. The winter arrival of Antoine Semenyo from Bournemouth, coupled with the addition of creative midfielder Rayan Cherki last summer, has further crowded the attacking rotation.
Doku remains admired within the club, but the report notes that he is “still not viewed as one of the first names on the teamsheet”.
Despite not always starting, Doku’s output has been notable. In 116 appearances across all competitions he has produced 17 goals and 32 assists, respectable numbers within a system that distributes attacking responsibility across multiple players.

His style provides something different. Where City’s structure often prioritises control, Doku brings disruption. His direct running and ability to beat defenders inject unpredictability into Guardiola’s otherwise meticulous approach.
One figure close to the situation reportedly believes clarity is essential before the winger considers committing further.
“Sources indicate the winger has concerns about his role and wants clarity over his future before committing.”
Such discussions are hardly unusual at elite clubs. Contracts represent commitment from both sides, and players increasingly seek assurances about their tactical importance before extending deals.
Across Europe, potential suitors have already taken notice. TeamTalk reports that Atletico Madrid are monitoring the situation closely as they prepare for a possible reshaping of their attacking line.
“Sources have told us that Doku is firmly on Atletico’s shortlist.”
The Spanish side may face significant changes, with uncertainty surrounding Julian Alvarez and veteran forward Antoine Griezmann’s future. Reinforcements in wide attacking areas therefore appear inevitable.
For Atletico, Doku represents a fascinating option. His pace and one against one ability would offer Diego Simeone an explosive outlet, particularly in transition.
However, any move remains hypothetical. For now, the focus remains on the discussions between player and club.
As the report concludes, “The outcome of those talks could prove crucial in determining whether the Belgian winger commits his long term future to the Premier League champions or becomes one of the more intriguing names to watch this summer.”
Football careers often pivot on such conversations. For Jeremy Doku, the coming months may shape not only his role at Manchester City, but also the next chapter of his career.
From a Manchester City supporter’s perspective, this situation feels both familiar and slightly surprising. Pep Guardiola’s squads are filled with elite attackers, yet players with Doku’s profile usually remain valuable pieces even when rotation becomes intense.
City fans have seen the pattern before. Exceptional talents rotate, adapt, and often explode in specific moments across a long season. Doku’s ability to beat defenders one on one offers something rare even in this technically brilliant squad.
A supporter might reasonably ask whether City would really allow a 23 year old winger with elite dribbling ability to leave while entering his prime years. One fan perspective could easily echo the sentiment that “players like Doku are exactly the kind who win tight Champions League ties when structure alone cannot break a defence.”
At the same time, Guardiola’s system rewards versatility and positional intelligence. Semenyo and Cherki arriving increases tactical options, and that inevitably reduces guaranteed minutes.
From a City fan viewpoint, the upcoming talks feel less like a crisis and more like squad evolution. The club will want Doku to stay, but only if he embraces the competitive rotation that defines Guardiola’s squads.
Supporters would likely prefer patience. Selling a player capable of creating chaos against defensive blocks would carry risk. If clarity arrives this summer, City could yet retain one of the Premier League’s most exciting wide attackers.
