Aston Villa Eye Zion Suzuki as Martínez Succession Plan Takes Shape

Aston Villa’s summer planning appears to have reached a significant stage, with Sports Boom reporting that Parma goalkeeper Zion Suzuki has emerged as a priority alternative target if Emiliano Martínez leaves the club.

The situation around Martínez has been building for some time. Villa are not pushing blindly into the market, but the club know that losing a goalkeeper of his status would demand a clear, decisive response. As Sports Boom put it, “The Martinez situation is directly shaping Suzuki’s future.”

Suzuki, 23, joined Parma in July 2024 and is under contract until June 2029, which gives the Italian club considerable control. His current Transfermarkt valuation stands at €20 million, though any serious move from Villa would likely need to go above that figure.

Suzuki Profile Fits Modern Villa

Suzuki has already earned 24 caps for Japan and made 20 Serie A appearances this season. For a goalkeeper still in the early stages of his career, that is meaningful experience across club and international football.

Sports Boom describe him as having “reflexes, positioning quality, and ability to play with the ball at his feet,” which explains why Villa would view him as a suitable modern replacement. Unai Emery’s side require a goalkeeper comfortable under pressure, capable of distributing cleanly, and strong enough to handle the emotional weight of replacing Martínez.

There is also a wider commercial angle. Suzuki “makes headlines in Japan after every match and carries serious commercial value in the Far East market.” That should never be the main reason for a signing, but for a Premier League club with European ambitions, it is a useful additional factor.

Rival Interest Raises Pressure

Villa are not operating alone. Sports Boom report that Bayern München, Inter, Napoli and Manchester United are also monitoring Suzuki.

That matters. Parma have no immediate need to sell and will be aware that multiple clubs can drive the fee upwards. Bayern are said to be considering Suzuki as a long-term goalkeeping investment, while Napoli and Inter may be attracted by his Serie A adaptation.

Manchester United’s presence adds another layer. With uncertainty and debate around the goalkeeping position at Old Trafford, their interest is logical. For Villa, that means timing could become crucial.

Sports Boom state that “no formal bids have been submitted to Parma at this stage,” with clubs still monitoring and assessing the situation.

Martínez Exit Could Force Fast Villa Move

Villa’s interest in Brighton’s Bart Verbruggen is also noted, although he is expected to be a more expensive option. That makes Suzuki particularly intriguing. He is younger, developing quickly, commercially attractive and tied to a club that would sell only on strong terms.

The report makes clear that Villa may have to act quickly once Martínez’s future is resolved. “If Martinez leaves, Villa will move. Fast.”

That feels like the key line. Villa are not yet at the point of making a formal offer, but the groundwork appears to be in place. Should Martínez depart, Suzuki could swiftly move from contingency plan to active target.

Our View – EPL Index Analysis

From an Aston Villa perspective, this report will probably land with mixed feelings.

Suzuki sounds exciting. He is young, international level, already tested in Serie A and clearly rated by serious clubs. There is a logic to the deal, especially if Villa want to sign someone with long-term upside rather than chase a short-term name.

The concern is obvious, though. Replacing Emiliano Martínez is not a normal transfer task. He has been more than a goalkeeper for Villa. He has been a personality, a winner, a leader and a symbol of the club’s rise. You do not simply swap that out and carry on as if nothing has changed.

Villa fans will also worry about competition. Bayern, Inter, Napoli and Manchester United being involved sounds flattering, but it usually means delays, rising fees and agents testing the market. Parma holding a contract until 2029 only adds to the anxiety.

There is a good plan here, but only if Villa execute it early. Letting Martínez go without having Suzuki or another serious replacement lined up would be a huge risk. Villa have built too much momentum to allow their goalkeeper position to become a summer scramble.
