Chelsea are already drawing up their transfer plans for 2026 as Enzo Maresca looks to strengthen his squad with greater depth and quality. A midfield target has been identified and attention is being directed towards Juventus star Manuel Locatelli.
The Blues can currently rely on Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo, but injury problems for Romeo Lavia and uncertainty around Andrey Santos mean questions remain about the depth of Maresca’s options. As the original report from Caught Offside details, “candidates are being identified by the club’s sporting department, and one of those that could arrive at Stamford Bridge is Manuel Locatelli.”

Locatelli has long been regarded as a technically gifted midfielder, one capable of dictating tempo and adding resilience in high-pressure games. His leadership qualities could address a gap in Chelsea’s young changing room.
Mark Brus reported for the Daily Briefing that “Chelsea hold an interest in Locatelli, although they face competition for his signature from fellow Premier League sides Newcastle, Aston Villa and West Ham, while Bayer Leverkusen are also said to be monitoring the situation of the Italy international.” Juventus, however, remain reluctant to sanction a sale. The club sees him as integral, though it is believed “an offer in the region of €40m would be considered unrejectable, which would be music to the ears of the interested clubs.”
Some surprise has been expressed at Chelsea’s interest, given it does not align with the club’s youth-driven transfer policy. Yet as Caught Offside emphasised, “he would add experience and leadership to a young changing room, which are traits needed if they are to mount a realistic challenge to the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal for the Premier League title in years to come.”
The coming months will reveal whether Chelsea act decisively or whether Newcastle, Aston Villa or even Bayer Leverkusen move ahead in the race. “For now, it remains to be seen whether Chelsea, Newcastle or Aston Villa make a move for Locatelli, who previously attracted transfer interest from Arsenal. This situation will be one to watch in 2026.”
Chelsea fans will feel a mix of excitement and caution about this story. On one hand, the club’s midfield has looked light whenever injuries strike, and adding a player with Locatelli’s pedigree would be a sensible move. He has proven himself at Juventus, he is still only 28 by the time 2026 arrives, and his ability to control games with composure could be exactly what this young squad needs.
Yet some scepticism lingers. Chelsea’s ownership has largely focused on signing younger players with resale value, so chasing Locatelli would represent a shift in strategy. While €40m is not outrageous in today’s market, it could be a gamble if Juventus remain unwilling sellers or if the player himself seeks Champions League football elsewhere.
From a fan perspective, this feels like a defining moment in Maresca’s project. Supporters expect him to build a side that can genuinely compete with Liverpool and Arsenal, and a proven midfielder could be the difference between fourth place and a title challenge. Rivals like Newcastle and Aston Villa also circling adds urgency, and fans will want Chelsea to move fast rather than allow another target to slip away.
Ultimately, excitement will build, but many fans will be asking whether this is another rumour or the first sign of Chelsea adding much-needed experience to a squad crying out for balance.
