Liverpool Defensive Injury Blow Deepens as Joe Gomez Setback Leaves Quansah Decision in Focus

Liverpool’s planning at centre-back has taken an uncomfortable turn after Joe Gomez suffered an injury in the pre-season friendly against Sunderland, a development that further narrows Andoni Iraola’s options before the new season begins.

As reported by BBC Sport, Gomez went off after only eight minutes and was then absent from training in Chicago on Sunday. There is still no confirmed timescale on the issue, but the immediate picture is clear enough. Liverpool are short in a key area of the pitch, and that shortage is sharpening the focus on both recruitment planning and existing contingency measures.

At present, Virgil van Dijk stands as the only fit senior centre-back available. For a side preparing for another demanding campaign, that is far from ideal. Van Dijk’s status as captain and defensive leader remains central, but relying so heavily on one established figure at this stage of pre-season leaves little margin for error.

The problem has been compounded by the unavailability of summer arrivals Jeremy Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni. Jacquet’s issue is understood to be minor, yet the timing leaves Iraola with an undeniably thin group in central defence. It is the sort of situation clubs prefer to avoid in July and August, because even short absences can disrupt rhythm, partnerships and tactical work.

Jarell Quansah Return Not in Liverpool Plans

One obvious name has re-entered the conversation, Jarell Quansah. Liverpool inserted a buyback clause when the England international joined Bayer Leverkusen in July 2025 for £30 million plus £5 million in add-ons, preserving a route back should circumstances change.

For now, though, that route appears closed. BBC Sport’s report states Liverpool have no intention of activating the clause in this window, despite renewed discussion around Quansah after an impressive first season in Germany. The 23-year-old has progressed well, secured regular football, and strengthened his standing with inclusion in England’s FIFA World Cup squad.

During the World Cup, Quansah addressed the speculation and said his focus is on “the now,” a response that reflects both professionalism and the current reality of his situation.

Transfer Window Leaves Liverpool with Key Choice

Liverpool’s stance suggests calm rather than panic, at least publicly. The club remain attentive to Quansah’s development and still hold long-term leverage through the buyback clause, which could become relevant later without the need to enter a fully competitive market.

What matters immediately is whether Gomez’s setback proves minor or whether it prompts a broader rethink. If the injury list eases quickly, Liverpool may stick to their existing course. If not, the centre-back situation could become one of the defining issues of the final weeks of the transfer window.

From a worried Liverpool fan’s perspective, this feels like the sort of update that starts small and suddenly becomes a major problem. One injury in pre-season can happen, two or three issues in the same position starts to look like a structural risk. Going into a new campaign with Virgil van Dijk as the only fit senior centre-back is not where anyone wants to be.

You can understand why the club would not want to rush into bringing Quansah back. If they have a plan, they should follow it, and if the buyback is designed for a later point, fair enough. But supporters will still look at this and ask whether Liverpool have left themselves too exposed. Quansah knows the club, has developed well, and would solve a problem that now looks very real.

There is also the wider concern about adaptation under Iraola. A new head coach needs time on the training pitch, stable availability, and trusted partnerships. Instead, Liverpool are already dealing with uncertainty at the back. That is not ideal preparation for a side expected to compete at the top end.

The hope, obviously, is that Gomez’s injury is minor and Jacquet is not far away. But hope is not a strategy, and fans know how quickly these situations can spiral. If Liverpool truly believe they are well covered, results and fitness will need to prove it very soon.
