Lazio defender Mario Gila has reportedly agreed personal terms with Milan, who must now convince Claudio Lotito to sanction the deal. According to Gazzetta dello Sport, the Rossoneri have overtaken Atalanta and Napoli in the race to sign the Spaniard.

Gila, who joined Lazio from Real Madrid in 2022, has established himself as one of the most dependable center-backs in Serie A. Indeed, the 25-year-old has been Lazio’s defensive mainstay in recent years, which is why Lotito is reluctant to budge on his €25 million asking price.

That’s not the only reason. With Los Blancos retaining a handsome 50% sell-on clause, Lazio have little incentive to lower their valuation, as half of any transfer fee would end up in Madrid. However, Lotito is running out of time. Gila’s contract at the Stadio Olimpico is due to expire next summer.

As such, Lazio must offload their first-team stalwart in the coming months. Otherwise, they’d run the risk of losing him on a free transfer in 12 months. Meanwhile, Milan seem determined to pounce on this opportunity, as they bid to overhaul their defensive options after a heartbreaking season.

Our take on Milan & Gila

Gila would be an upgrade on exit-linked Fikayo Tomori and academy graduate Matteo Gabbia. Therefore, it’s unsurprising that they’ve offered €22m for him. That’s just €3m short of Lazio’s valuation. However, with the player’s green light in the bag, they’re in a strong negotiating position.

Yet, Gila’s arrival won’t be enough to shore up Milan’s defensive woes. Though he’d be a major coup, the Rossoneri would still have to add at least one more center-back, especially if Tomori ends up leaving the club. Goncalo Inacio and Virgil van Dijk remain on Milan’s shortlist.
