Manchester City’s total package agreement with AC Milan for Tijjani Reijnders features nine clauses that could impact the final fee, it has been revealed.

The Netherlands international completed a high-profile switch to the Etihad Stadium earlier this summer as part of Manchester City’s midfield reshuffle and continued rebuild of their first-team options under new sporting director Hugo Viana.

With Kalvin Phillips expected to leave in the coming weeks and question marks lingering in the centre of the park concerning the likes of Ilkay Gundogan and Bernardo Silva, Guardiola turned to Reijnders as a dynamic and versatile option with European pedigree and experience at the highest level.

Reijnders impressed for Milan last season with his progressive play and work rate, becoming a key figure in their campaign. The 26-year-old also featured at Euro 2024 with the Netherlands, further enhancing his reputation as a reliable box-to-box presence with technical quality.

While Manchester City were expected to pay big money for such a profile, the full breakdown of the fee — and potential bonuses — paints a clearer picture of a deal that could rise significantly depending on performances both on and off the pitch.

According to the information of Calciomercato’s Daniele Longo, Manchester City paid an initial fee of €57.7 million to AC Milan for the services of Tijjani Reijnders, with a further €14 million available via an extensive bonus structure.

It is revealed that AC Milan will receive a further €5 million should Reijnders and Manchester City qualify for the UEFA Champions League during the forthcoming season, and an additional €1 million in the event of a Premier League title success.

Furthermore, €1 million will be paid if Reijnders is named Premier League Player of the Year, €2 million if the Netherlands international claims the Ballon d’Or, and another €2 million if he wins the UEFA Champions League with Manchester City.

Further payments are subject to his length of stay in Sky Blue, with it revealed that an additional €1 million will be paid in the event of a stay until 2023, €1 million if he stays until 2031, €1 million if he stays until 2032, and €1 million if he stays until 2032.

However, should Reijnders be sold by Manchester City before 2030, it is claimed that the Rossoneri would collect the full €14 million in bonuses immediately, unless at least one bonus was not met during the next five years, or if the midfielder were to be sold for free.

This relatively complex arrangement ensures AC Milan are well-positioned to benefit from any potential success Reijnders enjoys at the Etihad Stadium, while it also suggests City are confident in his long-term value, both in terms of performance and marketability.

From Manchester City’s perspective, the structure offers flexibility. Should Reijnders meet key performance and longevity targets, the total fee would be justified — especially if he contributes to further Premier League and UEFA Champions League titles.

As with other acquisitions, there is a clear focus on long-term planning, both from a football and financial perspective. Reijnders now has the chance to earn a central role in Guardiola’s plans and live up to a package deal that could end up among the most valuable midfield transfers in recent history.

Looking ahead, his adaptation to English football and ability to handle the demands of Pep Guardiola’s system will be crucial. Should he rise to the occasion, the incentives outlined for Milan could become reality sooner rather than later.
