Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo was unable to notch the 966th goal of his illustrious career after missing a penalty awarded to his Al-Nassr FC side during Saturday night's clash against Al-Fayha FC in the Saudi Pro League.
The referee awarded Al-Nassr a penalty as early as the 9th minute after French defender Mohamed Simakan went down in the box following contact with an Al-Fayha defender.
This decision quickly sparked controversy after the match. Analyst Saad Al-Kathiri told the Saudi daily Al-Jazirah that the referee had misjudged the situation and that the penalty should not have been given.
Meanwhile, Jordanian refereeing expert Ahmed Abou Khadija weighed in on the controversial penalty awarded to Sadio Mané's teammates.
Speaking to Al-Midan Sports, he stated that the referee's decision was justified, explaining that the Al-Fayha player had stepped on Mohamed Simakan's foot inside the area, thus legitimizing the penalty call.
Despite Cristiano Ronaldo's missed spot-kick, Al-Nassr ultimately came out on top, defeating their opponents 3-1—a crucial victory that puts them back atop the Saudi league table with 61 points.
