Rulani Mokwena's MC Alger secured a hard-fought 1-0 win over Ben Aknoun in the Algerian Ligue 1 on Tuesday night.
Ayoub Ghezala scored the decisive goal from the spot in the 56th minute to ensure the reigning Algerian champions claim maximum points.
As a result, Mokwena's side is currently six points clear at the top of the log standings, having picked up 28 points in 11 matches and have two games in hand.
The win is crucial as MCA suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to newly promoted outfit MB Rouissat last Thursday, which saw their unbeaten run in the league come to an end.
Mokwena has been tasked with retaining the championship won by Tunisian mentor Khaled Ben Yahia last season.
Moreover, the South African tactician is expected to lift domestic cup titles and steer the team to the latter stages of the CAF Champions League as they bowed out in the quarterfinals last term.
Up next for the former Wydad Athletic Club and Mamelodi Sundowns boss is a clash against ex-Orlando Pirates coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic's ES Setif on Monday, 29 December.
