An Oviedo referee was physically attacked by a San Luis player during a Tercera Asturfútbol match against Llanera B at Pepe Quimarán. The club later backed the player, justified his actions and said he would remain in the squad.
The club said in a statement that it would not condemn the attack, arguing that the refereeing decisions they endured encouraged such behaviour. It described the player as a key figure who would not be dropped, and the same statement complained of matchday shortcomings, alleged racist abuse of their number 23 and misogynistic comments towards visiting directors, and contested the dismissal of their coach.
The incident occurred in the 77th minute with the score at 2-2, after the referee awarded a penalty for a foul on a Llanera player. The San Luis player approached the official, struck him, knocked him to the ground and then kicked him.
Team-mates intervened to restrain the player. The referee, about 32 and from Oviedo, was not seriously hurt and continued to the final whistle.
Complaints also cited a 20-minute wait outside while some home personnel were already inside, and the need to buy water for the squad.
