El Correo reports that Athletic will play their 300th official match at the new San Mamés tomorrow against Sporting, comprising 237 Liga, 27 Copa, 1 Supercopa and 34 European games.
The original San Mamés opened on 21 August 1913 with a 1-1 draw against Racing de Irún. Pichichi scored after five minutes, Patricio Arabolaza equalised before the quarter-hour.
The new ground opened on 16 September 2013 in driving rain with only three stands complete. Charles scored for Celta after 11 minutes, Mikel San José equalised six later, Andoni Iraola and Beñat struck before Santi Mina set a 3-2 final.
The first home defeat arrived on 16 February 2014, 1-2 to Espanyol. Big nights followed, notably a 3-1 win over Napoli on 27 August 2014 in the Champions League play-off, and a 4-0 Supercopa first leg against Barcelona on 14 August 2015 en route to the trophy.
Barcelona fell again in the 2020 Copa quarters and the 2022 last 16, then Real Madrid in the 2022 quarters. The 3-0 second leg against Atlético in 2024 underpinned the latest Copa. There were bruising nights too, from Formentera’s last-minute shock to two exits to Osasuna, and last season’s Europa League semi-final against United.
Across 299 home matches the record reads 122 Liga wins, 64 draws and 51 defeats, with 369 scored and 216 conceded. In the Copa it is 17 wins, four draws and six defeats, 51-24. In Europe it is 22 wins, four draws and eight defeats, 62-33.
