The preferred transfer destination for Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali has now been named, even as Manchester United circle around him ahead of the upcoming window.
United are believed to be prioritising midfield reinforcements in the summer. Casemiro confirmed that he will leave the club at the end of the season and there are no plans to reverse course on that decision, despite the drastic improvement of his performances since Michael Carrick’s arrival.
Casemiro’s imminent exit combined with the uncertainty surrounding Manuel Ugarte’s future has only enhanced United’s need for additions in the middle of the park.
United are weighing up a number of options including Tonali, Elliot Anderson (Nottingham Forest), Carlos Baleba (Brighton & Hove Albion) and Adam Wharton (Crystal Palace).
However, a report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that Tonali is United’s top target. He has consistently impressed since joining Newcastle from AC Milan in July 2023. The Magpies are on track to miss out on Champions League qualification and it seems Tonali is open to parting ways and taking the next step in his career.
Newcastle are said to be planning a massive overhaul, which could benefit United given that Tonali is one of their most valuable assets.
It’s been indicated that Tonali would be open to sealing a switch to Old Trafford but TEAMtalk offer a different view, indicating that his preference would be to return to Italy. Juventus are keeping tabs on the player.
According to TEAMtalk, Juventus have made a “renewed push” this week to try and secure Tonali’s services.
The news outlet further states, “The Bianconeri, long admirers of the 31-times capped Azzurri midfielder, believe Tonali harbours a genuine desire to return to Serie A and sources suggest that wish, seen as the player’s ideal, does give Juve a transfer chance.”
“Tonali himself has spoken positively about life at St James’ Park. Yet the pull of a return to Italy remains a sentimental and strong factor…”
It’s understood that the main hurdle for Juventus is Newcastle’s valuation of Tonali. The Tyneside club want as much as £100m for the 25-year-old, a figure that is simply beyond the Old Lady’s capabilities. Newcastle have no desire to lose Tonali but circumstances may ultimately force them to let him go.
TEAMtalk add that United’s pursuit of Tonali is not as strong as it has been made out in some quarters, and the Red Devils may already be shifting their attention elsewhere. United do not want to overpay and are unlikely to meet Newcastle’s asking price.
Other potential destinations for Tonali are Manchester City and Arsenal, with both clubs monitoring him ahead of a summer transfer window that promises numerous twists and turns.
