Santos supporters staged protests against president Marcelo Teixeira’s administration at Vila Belmiro and the CT Rei Pelé in the early hours of Tuesday.

According to Globo.com, banners were unfurled criticising Teixeira and football executive Alexandre Mattos.

Messages condemned the sale of academy talents and described discussion of a potential SAF model and a new arena as smokescreens amid the current crisis. They also took aim at recruitment, citing forward Bilal Brahimi, who was recently loaned to Portuguese football.

Other banners questioned the club’s much-mentioned rebuilding and urged those in the numbered seats to back the team and cut the boos during games.

Images of the overnight protest circulated on social media and the club removed the material on Tuesday morning.

On Monday, Teixeira used social media to reject talk of a crisis and to defend the work carried out over the past two years. He said he understood fans’ frustration, asked for a vote of confidence and appealed for unity between squad and support, as seen late in last year’s Brasileiro.

Santos are 14th in the Campeonato Paulista with six points, one place above the relegation zone. They also opened the Campeonato Brasileiro with a comeback defeat to Chapecoense.
