Former Lazio head coach Maurizio Sarri is reportedly interested in a reunion with Nicolo Rovella at Atalanta.
The 67-year-old endured a troublesome year in the Italian capital on all levels, and his strained relationship with Lazio president Claudio Lotito made his exit inevitable. Luckily for the Tuscan boss, he immediately found himself a new role, reuniting with former Napoli sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli at Atalanta.
According to Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla, the Orobici are expected to undergo a midfield revamp this summer. Atalanta have already accepted to sell Ederson to Manchester United for €45 million, and have yet to find a replacement.
The transfer market expert confirms that Sarri would like to work with Rovella once again. Therefore, La Dea has enquired about the 24-year-old. Nevertheless, the Italian midfielder has already expressed his desire to stay at Lazio during his chat with his new head coach, Gennaro Gattuso.
The Genoa youth product joined the Biancocelesti in the summer of 2023. While he had his highs and lows in his first campaign under Sarri, he established himself as a key player during Marco Baroni’s reign in 2024/25, emerging as one of the best deep-lying playmakers in Italian football.
Sadly for Rovella, he is coming off a miserable campaign marred by two surgeries. His first half of the season was wrecked by a long-term groin issue. He made his return in January, only to suffer a fractured shoulder due to an awkward fall against Cagliari.
Therefore, the midfielder’s priority is to regain his best condition and bounce back with a solid campaign under Gattuso. It should be noted that Rovella had explained how he fell madly in love with Lazio and would like to stay at the club for many years.
