Lionel Scaloni confirmed Lionel Messi will feature in Argentina’s upcoming friendlies, speaking before the first match of the window. He also set out plans to maintain competitiveness and widen the selection pool.
According to SuperDepor.com, Scaloni said an agreement to stage the Finalissima could not be reached, so Argentina reshaped their schedule and sought alternative opponents. He indicated there are circumstances that place football in the background, and saw no point in sparking controversy.
On selection, he noted the core of the squad is established, while staff continue to monitor options and form. He stressed the value of training time beyond the FIFA window, aiming for players to arrive as close to their peak as possible. He wants to restore levels and use a balanced mix from within the group.
Looking ahead, he avoided promises about the next World Cup, describing it as extremely demanding and likely to change how rivals approach Argentina. He believes no fewer than 10 national teams could win it.
Scaloni praised the impact of youngsters and the pathway for talents such as Tomás Aranda, emphasising opportunities and the enthusiasm they bring. He said the chosen base is intended to mirror the comfort of their usual facility, and each camp reinforces the team’s identity.
Argentina face Mauritania on Friday at 20:15 at the Estadio Alberto J. Armando, commonly known as La Bombonera, with Zambia also on the schedule.
