With the World Cup in the United States five days away, several Scotland supporters say their ESTA travel approvals have been revoked, putting trips to back the Tartan Army in jeopardy.

On Friday, fans reported sudden status changes without explanation, shifting from approved to pending, then to not authorised. Some said their authorisations would no longer permit entry to the United States.

“Last Tuesday, I received an email saying my ESTA status had changed. I logged in and it showed pending instead of approved. Two hours later another email said I was not authorised to travel,” said Scotland fan Scott Briad. “But the most frustrating part is the lack of answers, they simply refuse to tell you why,” he told The Times.

Lauren Bis, acting deputy secretary of the US Department of Homeland Security, said the Trump administration enforces immigration laws and that under the Visa Waiver Program all ESTA applications are subject to continuous screening against law enforcement and security databases. “Approval of an ESTA authorisation does not guarantee admission,” she said.

The number of supporters affected remains unclear. Others online reported approvals switching back to pending and now must wait up to 72 hours for a decision, deepening uncertainty as departures near.
