Stadio San Siro sets the stage for a mouth-watering Easter Sunday showdown between Serie A pacesetters Inter and top-four hopefuls Roma. A record-equaling 186th meeting between the two sides promises plenty of drama, with both clubs desperate for points to boost their respective ambitions.

Inter’s form fell off a cliff before March’s international break. Indeed, losing standout striker Lautaro Martinez to injury in mid-February derailed the Nerazzurri’s scoring potential, with Cristian Chivu’s side averaging just under a goal per game across six competitive outings in El Toro’s absence.

Furthermore, Inter are currently on a three-game winless run for the first time since 2023, allowing second-placed Milan to close the gap to six points. With seven matches left to play, the San Siro heavyweights cannot afford any slip-ups if they are to maintain their Serie A lead and walk away with their 21st Scudetto.

Visiting Roma could throw a spanner in the works, as they vie for their first top-four finish since the 2017/18 season. Robinio Vaz’s second-half header inspired the Giallorossi to a narrow 1-0 home win over bottom-half Lecce on the stroke of the international break, ending their three-match winless league streak (D1, L2).

However, Roma will likely have to go back-to-back for the first time since mid-January if they’re to stay relevant in the top-four picture. Gian Piero Gasperini’s charges trail fourth-placed Como by three points ahead of Sunday night’s kickoff.

Match Preview

Inter

The club season hit a pause button at an opportune moment for Inter, providing Chivu with the chance to reignite the team’s attacking rhythm ahead of a crucial run-in. Staring down the barrel of a four-game winless run in Serie A for the first time since April 2023, the runaway leaders can take confidence from Lautaro’s return from injury.

For context, Inter have averaged 2.2 goals per match with the Argentine striker in the starting lineup this season. On the other hand, they have scored a meager one goal per game in his absence. Moreover, the impending return to San Siro vows to help the underperforming Nerazzurri fix their problems.

Indeed, Inter have emerged victorious from ten of their last 13 home league outings (D2, L1). It’s also worth noting that they’ve bagged a league-high 2+ goals in 11 of their 15 Serie A home fixtures this season, accumulating a total of 39 strikes – just one shy of Roma’s combined home and away tally of 40.

Roma

Despite halting an underwhelming five-match winless streak in all competitions just before the break (D2, L3), Roma cannot afford to rest on their laurels, with their top-four quest teetering on a knife-edge. A win at San Siro would move them within striking distance of Como, but anything less could see them slip further behind in a tightly contested race for Champions League qualification.

However, that could be easier said than done, considering the Giallorossi have suffered three defeats in their last four away league games (D1), conceding precisely two goals on each occasion. In addition, Gasperini has lost a career-high 18 Serie A clashes against Inter (W5, D9), highlighting the magnitude of the task awaiting the visitors tonight.

As if that’s not concerning enough, Roma fell to a gut-wrenching 1-0 defeat in October’s reverse fixture, marking their ninth loss in their last 11 meetings with the Nerazzurri. On a more positive note, the Giallorossi’s two wins in that sequence have come at San Siro, proving that they are capable of springing surprises in Milan despite the daunting statistics.

Team News

Inter have received a double injury boost ahead of this clash, as Hakan Calhanoglu has regained full fitness, alongside Lautaro. Furthermore, Henrikh Mkhitaryan could make the bench after shrugging off a minor muscle issue. However, Chivu has lost Carlos Augusto and Yann Bisseck to suspension and injury, respectively.

As for Roma, star wingback Wesley Franca has joined long-term absentees Artem Dovbyk, Paulo Dybala, and Evan Ferguson on the sidelines. Midfield metronome Manu Kone is also unavailable due to a muscle strain, which is likely to force Neil El Aynaoui’s return to the starting XI.

Inter vs Roma Potential Starting Lineups

Inter (3-5-2): Sommer; Akanji, Acerbi, Bastoni; Dumfries, Barella, Calhanoglu, Zielinski, Dimarco; Thuram, Martinez.

Roma (3-4-2-1): Svilar; Mancini, Ndicka, Hermoso; Celik, Cristante, El Aynaoui, Tsimikas; Pisilli, Pellegrini; Malen.

Inter vs Roma Prediction

Buoyed by Lautaro’s long-awaited return, Inter look primed to reclaim their attacking fluency and maintain their formidable home record in Serie A. With several first-team stalwarts ruled out, Roma face the daunting task of overcoming a recent pattern of away defeats and a difficult head-to-head record against the Nerazzurri.
