Sheffield Wednesday will not be signing Wes Burns, as the winger agreed a new one-year deal to stay at Ipswich Town.
Sheffield Wednesday are set for a hectic summer window as they prepare for their first season under new owners Arise Capital Partners.
The Owls’ relegation from the Championship felt inevitable before they had even entered administration last October, with the fans only really bothered about securing a future for the club.
Pleasingly, the US takeover means they can look forward with optimism, but it’s also clear that Henrik Pedersen and the recruitment team have a lot of work to do to ensure the team are competitive going into League One.

It has been a good window for Wednesday on that front, with Ricardo Santos, Sil Swinkels and Callum Slattery among the new arrivals, with all three expected to make a big impact at Hillsborough.
However, Pedersen will want many more new signings, and Wednesday appear to be aiming high, as they had been linked with an ambitious move for Wes Burns.
Yet, that won’t be happening, as Ipswich announced that the right midfielder has signed a new one-year deal to stay at Portman Road following their promotion to the Premier League.
Burns’ deal with the Suffolk outfit was up this summer, and there were doubts over whether the Tractor Boys would keep the 31-year-old, who was instrumental to their rise up the leagues after joining from Fleetwood in 2021.
With Kieran McKenna leaving Ipswich, and Gary O’Neil named as his successor, that created further doubt over Burns’ future, but he has now committed to the club for a sixth year.
This was always going to be a difficult deal to do, as whilst Burns is no longer a key player for Ipswich, he has still played a role for the team when he has been fit and available.

It remains to be seen whether that carries on in the Premier League, but O’Neil obviously values what the experienced winger can bring to the group, both on and off the pitch.
So, for Wednesday, it’s now a case of moving on to another target, but the fans should be pleased that they are in the market for players like Burns.
By bringing in Swinkels, Santos, Slattery and Jordi Liongola, the Owls have made major improvements to the squad, and they are the calibre of player that Wednesday must be targeting.
Given the size and potential of Wednesday, promotion is always going to be the aim for the club when they are in the third tier, even if there has to be an understanding that the new owners are starting from a very low base in terms of what they inherited.
But, the early moves in the market have been hugely encouraging, and Burns would’ve been another big signing for Pedersen’s squad.
Obviously, that isn’t going to happen now, and you can understand why the player has opted to stay with Ipswich, even if he won’t always play.
For Wednesday, it’s a case of moving on, and it will be interesting to see who else they sign ahead of their League One opener at Leyton Orient on August 15.
