Sheffield Wednesday stars are attracting transfer interest this January

Sheffield Wednesday have the financial freedom to set their own asking price for in-demand players like Charlie McNeill and Pierce Charles this January.

According to The Star, the Owls’ proposed takeover allows them the ability to demand reasonable fees for these players instead of being forced into cut-rate prices.

Sheffield Wednesday went into administration in October, and have been seeking a new owner to replace Dejphon Chansiri in the months since.

It was reported in December that the offer led by James Bord has been named as the preferred bid to purchase the Yorkshire outfit.

However, it remains unclear when the deal will be ratified, if at all, by the EFL, as the club aims to resolve their current financial issues.

It is believed that any player sales made this month will go against the sale price agreed by the Bord-led bid to buy Sheffield Wednesday, which is expected to be in excess of £30 million.

This could reduce the cost of purchasing the Yorkshire outfit without falling afoul of the EFL’s financial rules regarding 25 pence in the pound being owed to creditors.

It’s understood that this will give the club the freedom to set their own asking price for players, as interest mounts for the likes of Charles, McNeill and Bailey Cadamarteri.

Strasbourg are reportedly interested in a deal for Charles amid the appointment of Gary O’Neil as manager.

Meanwhile, a number of Championship sides are interested in a deal to sign McNeill following his recent impressive performances in Henrik Pedersen’s side.

It remains to be seen whether any deal can be struck for these players that can convince Sheffield Wednesday to cash in, but the club can now demand appropriate fees for their young stars as opposed to needing any kind of funds just to maintain financial stability.

Player sales could still make sense for Sheffield Wednesday despite fresh boost

Ideally, Pedersen would like to hold onto the likes of Charles and McNeill, but if a good enough offer arrives then they could still prefer to sell at this stage.

But the positive is that the Owls can now command greater fees for their young stars, as they were at risk of losing them for next to nothing just a few months ago.

There will be no quick fix for Sheffield Wednesday’s financial situation, particularly with relegation on the horizon, but this development shows the progress that’s been made.

Given how thin the Owls’ squad is at the moment, this may at least help the club hold onto these players until the end of the campaign.
