The Owls' 25/26 campaign got underway on Sunday with a defeat away at Leicester City.

Sky Sports pundit Jobi McAnuff has called the situation at Sheffield Wednesday "ridiculous" and "unacceptable." He believes that the owner, Dejphon Chansiri, needs to take some form of sale action sooner rather than later.

Football in the Championship is back and Wednesday are no longer under any EFL embargoes, which makes a change from the summer. The situation at Hillsborough is still bleak, though.

With a very small squad that is already suffering from injuries and suspension, Henrik Pedersen has a seemingly insurmountable task ahead of him to keep the club afloat, and that's if he can do it before Chansiri potentially sinks it.

It was reported by Alan Nixon on Sunday, prior to the Owls' 2-1 loss to Leicester City, that the players had been told that a takeover was coming, in an attempt to stop more players from pushing to leave the club. Wednesday stalwart Liam Palmer said after the defeat, however, that he and his teammates have often been left frustrated over the lack of clarity on the club's status.

More trouble may not be too far away from Wednesday. The embargoes were only lifted because the club received solidarity payments from the Premier League that allowed them to clear their owed debts. Without this, they would likely be under the same restrictions.

There will always remain hope that a new owner can come in to Hillsborough and sort the mess out, but there also remain fears, from the likes of McAnuff, about just how quickly Chansiri will look to sell the club, if he can no longer continue to finance it.

"Obviously it's been a really disappointing, frustrating situation, an unacceptable one," said the pundit on Sky Sports, ahead of the Sunday afternoon match at the King Power Stadium.

"When you look at that list, which is a long rap sheet (detailing Wednesday's recent misdemeanours), that's just in terms of what has happened this summer. We do have to remember that there are issues previous to that, whether it was financial, whether it was having arguments with fans, asking fans to stump up money.

"That is your obligation as an owner of a football club, which is an absolute privilege, particularly with a football club with the history of Sheffield Wednesday, with the fanbase that comes week in, week out. Your obligation is to support that football club. Not just those players - we're talking about staff that haven't been paid.

"For me, to have one person in total control, pretty much. I listened to Chris Powell, a former coach, talking about the dysfunctional nature of the structure of the football club. No board, you've got a secretary in there; I'm not sure how difficult that is for her, at the moment. But pretty much [there's] nobody else there.

"It's a ridiculous situation, and hopefully from the EFL's perspective, in terms of what they've said, either put up the money that's needed to keep this football club going and operational. If you can't do, or you're choosing not to do it, you have to sell it. It's that simple.

"I really hope for the football club's sake that we get a resolution sooner rather than later."

Sheffield Wednesday's uncertainty will always remain while Chansiri is in charge

Where Wednesday go from here is ultimately unknown. Pedersen has said that he wants to bring in more players to add to his miniscule reserves, although that won't be as straightforward as usual, even without the embargoes.

Even if they can convince players to come to Hillsborough, the looming ownership situation and the further problems that it could cause will still remain.

The most recent reports on Chansiri's demands have suggested that the Thai national wants £100 million for the Owls - AKA, almost as much as what Sheffield United, a club that was in the Premier League two seasons ago, was bought for last winter. That is not realistic or particularly conducive to pushing through a sale.
