Southampton’s youth-first recruitment, which contributed to relegation in 2022/23, has left them with a Juan Larios problem to solve this summer.

Signed from Manchester City for £6m at 18 alongside Sam Edozie, Larios has featured only six times. According to El Pelotazo, he was offered to Spanish second-tier side Cádiz CF, who considered him before ruling out a move.

Larios was regarded as a coup on arrival but injuries have defined his Saints career. Now 22, the club are expected to try to move him on in the coming weeks.

Even so, 2025/26 was described as his most complete season to date, with 19 starts on loan across Cultural Leonesa and Real Zaragoza.

As Southampton look to raise funds from players surplus to requirements, Larios will certainly be on his way out.

The episode is a reminder that, if they find themselves back in that Premier League predicament, present-ready signings must take priority as the top flight tightens, something Sport Republic are learning.

The club are pushing on in the market. With Daniel Peretz and Cyle Larin already in, the focus turns to retaining core talent and adding smart depth, while Tonda Eckert’s future remains unresolved. Johannes Spors unearthed German-market value in 2025 with Leo Scienza and Caspar Jander, and more of the same would help.
