According to The Sun, Southampton are exploring a January loan for Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson, with Sunderland said to prefer a permanent sale and head coach Tonda Eckert also wanting a striker after struggles for Cameron Archer and Damion Downs.
The 25-year-old was the Black Cats' first choice in the Championship last season as Regis Le Bris' side won promotion to the Premier League.
Patterson helped them through the play-offs, with victories over Coventry City and Sheffield United in the semi-final and final respectively.
He has not featured in the top flight after being replaced by Dutch keeper Robin Roefs during the summer window.
Southampton are seeking improvement in goal, with Gavin Bazunu and Alex McCarthy alternating without making the position their own.
The club do not expect to be busy in January and have a limited budget. They could use the loan market, and a handful of fringe players are expected to be available for sale.
