Southampton have renewed their interest and, The Sun reports, are pursuing a loan for Sunderland’s out-of-favour goalkeeper Anthony Patterson, 25.
The board may be running out of patience with Gavin Bazunu, whose standout asset is his distribution. He ranks in the bottom 7.7 percent for goals he should have saved, a minus four from open play, excluding an error at Queens Park Rangers that led to a Rumarn Burrell goal.
The free-scoring form of the front three under Tonda Eckert has deflected attention from those mistakes. By comparison, Patterson was at minus 1.5 from open play in Sunderland’s promotion season, then delivered plus 4.06 the previous year.
His strengths include claiming high balls from crosses and long-ball accuracy. Sunderland are said not to favour a loan and would prefer a fee.
Valued around £8 million and on about £20,000 a week, a permanent deal could suit Sport Republic, with an immediate Premier League return in their sights this season.
If Patterson were to arrive at St Mary’s, it could help smooth Aaron Ramsdale’s permanent sale, with the keeper valued at about £25 million and on wages in excess of £100,000 per week.
Such a move might also prompt Tonda Eckert to revisit playing out from the back. Bazunu accepts the ball under pressure, which may not be Patterson’s preference.
Doing nothing in goal is not considered an option for Johannes Spors. With parachute payments ending after two years, promotion within 18 months is considered imperative.
