An exciting midfielder has just showed he's ready to join Liverpool.
The arrival of Andoni Iraola is expected to usher in a significant tactical shift at Liverpool, with many supporters hopeful that it will mark a return to the high-octane, aggressive style of football that became synonymous with Jurgen Klopp’s most successful teams.
Iraola has built his reputation on an intense, front-foot approach that prioritises pressing high up the pitch, winning possession quickly, and overwhelming opponents with relentless energy. If he successfully implements those principles at Anfield, Liverpool’s squad may require some reshaping, particularly in midfield, where the demands of such a system are especially high.
As a result, the Reds are likely to be active in the transfer market this summer. Rather than targeting a single midfield addition, Liverpool could find themselves pursuing two or even three new options to ensure they have the depth, athleticism, and tactical flexibility required to execute Iraola’s vision.
Much will depend on the futures of several current midfielders. Curtis Jones and Alexis Mac Allister are two players whose situations could have a major influence on Liverpool’s recruitment plans.
Mac Allister appears to be one of the more likely candidates to leave should a suitable offer arrive, while Jones may reassess his own future following Arne Slot’s departure.
A change in management often alters a player’s standing within a squad, and Iraola’s arrival could potentially provide Jones with a fresh opportunity to establish himself.
Even so, there is a growing sense that Liverpool will strengthen in the middle of the park regardless of what happens with those two players.
At least two new midfielders arriving at the AXA Training Centre before the start of next season feels like a realistic possibility.
The challenge, however, will be balancing those ambitions with the club’s wider transfer needs. Liverpool are also expected to strengthen in the wide attacking areas, with at least two wingers believed to be on the radar.
Among those targets is Yan Diomande, whose potential transfer would likely command a substantial fee. Beyond that, reinforcements are also needed in defence, where both a centre-back and a right-back could be required.
Given the scale of the rebuild and the financial realities involved, Liverpool may need to be creative in the market.
Fortunately, thinking outside the box has long been one of the hallmarks of Michael Edwards and Liverpool’s recruitment department.
This summer may once again require the club’s decision-makers to identify smart, innovative solutions rather than simply pursuing the most obvious names available.
And there's one name who just confirmed he could be that genius deal for the Reds this summer.
Christ Inao Oulai may not be a name familiar to many football fans right now, but that is unlikely to remain the case for long. The 19-year-old is one of the most exciting young midfield talents emerging in Europe and has all the attributes to become a household name in the years ahead.
Currently playing for Trabzonspor, the Ivorian midfielder first began attracting attention during his breakthrough performances in Ligue 2, where he impressed despite still being in his teenage years. Since making the move to Turkey, he has continued his rapid development and established himself as one of the brightest prospects in the Super Lig.
While Oulai is not physically imposing, he more than compensates with his exceptional athleticism, work rate and intelligence. His ability to cover ground is remarkable, allowing him to influence every phase of play. There are moments when he seems to be everywhere at once, constantly offering himself as an option in possession while also closing down opponents out of it.
That profile makes him an ideal fit for the kind of high-intensity, pressing football Liverpool are expected to prioritise.
What stands out most is his maturity. Despite being only 19 years old, Oulai already plays with the composure and authority of a far more experienced midfielder. He has shown an impressive ability to dictate the tempo of matches for Trabzonspor, rarely looking rushed when in possession and consistently making smart decisions under pressure.
His passing numbers underline that quality. Averaging around 50 passes per 90 minutes in the Turkish top flight while maintaining a completion rate of 91.4%, Oulai is a reliable distributor who helps his team control games. Yet he is far from a conservative passer. Rather than simply recycling possession, he actively looks to advance play, averaging 7.7 passes into the final third every 90 minutes.
He also offers a significant carrying threat. Oulai regularly drives forward with the ball, averaging 2.34 progressive runs per 90 minutes, demonstrating both the confidence and technical quality required to break opposition lines.
Defensively, he is just as impressive. Aggressive in the press and relentless in his work without the ball, Oulai thrives when hunting possession high up the pitch. He consistently looks to disrupt opponents in dangerous areas and averages roughly three ball recoveries per 90 minutes in the opposition's half.
For a player still in his teens, Oulai possesses a rare combination of energy, technical quality and tactical intelligence. It is little wonder that he is increasingly being viewed as one of the most promising midfielders of his generation.
Obviously, he's been doing this in the Turkish league, but on Thursday night he confirmed he is ready for the next step in his career and to play for a club like Liverpool.
Coming up against France, Oulai came on to play the last 22 minutes of the match for his country Ivory Coast and he helped his side to victory - all while winning the most tackles in the entire game (4).
