Manchester United opted against investing in midfield in the recent transfer window. The Premier League giants roped in Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Sesko, and Senne Lammens this summer, while Diego Leon arrived after a deal had been agreed in January.

A new midfielder was in Ruben Amorim’s plans ahead of the new campaign, and the Red Devils did explore multiple options for the job.

Among them was Atletico Madrid’s Conor Gallagher, and United were apparently eyeing the former Chelsea man as a cheaper alternative to Carlos Baleba.

A deal, though, failed to materialize this summer and the Englishman ended up staying at the Metropolitano Stadium.

United haven’t lost track of Gallagher

It was later reported that Amorim was willing to offload Kobbie Mainoo to get his hands on Gallagher this summer.

There have been doubts about the 20-year-old’s suitability to the Portuguese head coach’s system, and he had also asked to leave on loan this summer.

While none of the transfers saw the light of day, United are likely to return for Gallagher at the turn of the year.

Amorim apparently sees that player’s all-round abilities as a good fit for his tactics. However, according to Fichajes, the Red Devils will face competition from Tottenham Hotspur in the race to sign the 25-year-old.

Gallagher is proven in the Premier League

Gallagher rose through the ranks at Chelsea and has over 100 appearances in the Premier League. As such, United believe that the player can hit the ground running with a return to the English top-flight.

Gallagher has become a key feature under Diego Simeone for Los Rojiblancos, but is apparently ready to move back to England.

The player will be enticed by the option of joining Amorim’s project at Old Trafford, although Spurs are likely to be an attractive destination as well.

The north London side won the Europa League last season and are now aiming to reach greater heights under Thomas Frank.

However, having already represented Chelsea, Gallagher may not be too eager move to Spurs, which could work in United’s advantage in the winter.
