Haji Wright struck in the 21st minute to set Coventry City on course for a 3-1 win over Middlesbrough. He is now second in Championship scoring on 13 goals.
The USA forward peeled into space and slotted home from the centre of the area after Jack Rudoni's through ball, a composed finish that settled Coventry.
After the restart he doubled up, guiding in from close range after Carl Rushworth's direct pass (55.).
He then completed his treble from the spot (71.) after a handball by Matt Targett, restoring control just as Boro had threatened a response.
Wright finished with five attempts, three on target, and won two aerial duels. He also had six touches in the box and created one chance, a profile that kept Boro's back line stretched throughout.
Coventry City rise from second to first in the Championship. They visit West Bromwich Albion next. Boro host Oxford United.
