Stewart Donald responded to Juan Sartori on social media after Sunderland’s comeback win at Everton kept their European hopes alive. According to Sunderland Echo, the exchange followed a memorable afternoon on Merseyside.
Sunderland came from behind after the interval, with Brian Brobbey, Enzo Le Fée and Wilson Isidor all scoring in a superb second half.
Sartori, part of the club’s ownership group, attended the match at Hill Dickinson Stadium with his daughter and posted on social media: “That’s how you fight ’til the end @sunderlandafc. One to remember with Sasha.”
Donald replied on Sartori’s Facebook page, suggesting Europe might be possible, adding that he was delighted for Sartori and hoped to catch up soon. He also used a flexed-arm emoji and an OK hand gesture.
The exchange came against an evolving ownership backdrop. Donald led the consortium that bought the club from Ellis Short in 2018 after relegation to League One, with Sartori joining alongside Charlie Methven.
Donald later sold his majority shareholding and Kyril Louis-Dreyfus became chairman and majority shareholder in 2021. Sartori remained involved and is now part of the current ownership with Louis-Dreyfus.
Sartori has been tied to contrasting eras, from the League One struggles and the Wembley play-off triumph to this impressive first season back in the Premier League. Donald’s tenure remains divisive among supporters, with the failure to escape League One and Sunderland ’Til I Die still referenced.
The Black Cats finish against Chelsea at the Stadium of Light, needing a win and help elsewhere, with Brentford facing Liverpool and Brighton meeting Manchester United.
