Sunderland condemned racist abuse aimed at Lutsharel Geertruida during the Tyne-Wear derby at St James' Park, the club said in a statement that there can be 'no tolerance, no excuses, and no ambiguity' over such incidents.
The match was briefly halted in the second half as referee Anthony Taylor spoke with players and staff from both teams before play resumed.
The club are aware of the reported abuse, have given full backing to Geertruida and praised him for alerting officials during the game. They labelled racism unacceptable and abhorrent, and acknowledged Newcastle United's statement, expecting those responsible to be identified and held to account. They also stressed football must be safe and inclusive for everyone, and will continue working with the authorities to support that aim.
Newcastle United are aware of an allegation made by a visiting player against someone in the crowd during their Premier League meeting with Sunderland. The club reiterates that discrimination is not tolerated and will work with the authorities to investigate fully, ensuring any individuals are identified and held accountable.
A full investigation is now underway via the Premier League Match Centre, which has offered support to the player and both clubs. It restated that racism has no place in the game or wider society, and vowed to keep working with stakeholders and authorities to make stadiums inclusive and welcoming.
