Sunderland supporters travelling to Sunday’s Tyne-Wear derby against Newcastle United will be escorted from Newcastle Central Station to St James’ Park under a major safety operation.

According to Sunderland Echo, months of planning by both clubs and regional partners underpins arrangements to move away fans safely from the station to the ground.

The principal escort for those arriving by rail is scheduled to leave Central Station at 10.15am, mirroring the approach used at December’s reverse fixture.

Supporters arriving later could face delays if extra escorts are needed, risking missing the start, so fans are urged to reach the station before 10.15am.

Inside the station, officers and event staff will direct supporters to a designated area before the escorted walk departs. Official club coaches are unaffected and will arrive directly at St James’ Park.

Public transport is expected to be extremely busy, with Metro and rail operating a standard Sunday timetable. Allow extra time and expect queues.

Engineering works mean there are no direct trains from Durham or Darlington to Newcastle, with a limited rail replacement in place. Drivers should expect road closures around Central Station, St James Boulevard and Barrack Road.

There will be a significantly increased police presence across Newcastle city centre and around the ground. Officers aim to ensure safety and minimal disruption, and ask supporters to cooperate, with zero tolerance for disorder and the prospect of prosecutions, football banning orders and further club action. Additional officers will also patrol both city centres.
