Sunderland’s 2025/26 outlay has pushed them among the Premier League’s biggest spenders as the run-in begins. Regis Le Bris’s side, lifted by signings including Habib Diarra, Brian Brobbey and Chemsdine Talbi, are chasing the highest possible finish after a 2-1 comeback at Tyne-Wear rivals Newcastle United before the international break left them 11th, a point above the Magpies and three behind seventh-place Brentford.
According to Sunderland Echo, only five clubs have posted a higher net spend than Sunderland this season. Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City, Tottenham and Manchester United lead the way, with Sunderland sixth on €155.59m.
Tottenham’s level of spending stands out given they are 17th, a point above the relegation zone and 13 behind Sunderland, who they visit next Sunday.
At the other end, Chelsea’s €4.90m net spend is the smallest negative figure, influenced by big-money departures of Noni Madueke, Christopher Nkunku, Joao Felix and Lesley Ugochukwu.
Only Brentford, Brighton, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Bournemouth have turned a profit this season, at €+50.06m, €+63.15m, €+81.10m and €+130.31m respectively. Sunderland’s outlay would have been higher but for the sales of Jobe Bellingham and Tom Watson for a combined €42.5m, per Transfermarkt.
