Sunderland youngster Melker Ellborg has been left out of Graham Potter’s 26-man Sweden squad for this summer’s World Cup.
According to Sunderland Echo, many nations are still on provisional lists, but Potter confirmed his final group earlier this week.
Ellborg is uncapped at senior level. He was called into Sweden earlier this year after Robin Roefs’ injury brought him into Sunderland’s side, with Potter’s options also injured.
Roefs has since reclaimed the starting place and Potter has turned to more experienced options.
AIK’s Kristoffer Nordfeldt is included alongside Viktor Johansson of Stoke City and Jacob Widell Zetterstrom of Derby County. Nordfeldt returned for the play-offs in March and looks most likely to be number one this summer.
Sunderland should be well represented. Granit Xhaka, Omar Alderete, Habib Diarra and Nilson Angulo are regulars for Switzerland, Paraguay, Senegal and Ecuador, all qualified. If fit, those players are locks for their squads.
Sadiki, a DR Congo regular, will remain a regular if fit, while Roefs could be selected by the Netherlands. Brian Brobbey and Lutsharel Geertruida are strong contenders after recent selections.
Chemsdine Talbi made his first start for Morocco in Tuesday’s friendly and, having been in their recent AFCON squad, seems likely to travel.
Wilson Isidor will also travel after choosing Haiti, making his first appearances and scoring his first goal this break.
Simon Adingra and Arthur Masuaku could feature for the Ivory Coast and DR Congo respectively, though there is doubt over whether they will be Sunderland players this summer.
