Sunderland’s formidable early-season record at the Stadium of Light has slipped in recent weeks, with their home form under the microscope before visits from Manchester United and Chelsea.

According to Sunderland Echo, results on Wearside set the tone for their Premier League return, beginning with an opening day win over West Ham United as Dan Ballard, Wilson Isidor and Eliezer Mayenda all scored.

The ground became a fortress, with Bournemouth, Crystal Palace and Newcastle United beaten, while Aston Villa, Arsenal and Manchester City were held to awkward draws.

By mid-February, Sunderland owned the league’s only unbeaten home record after 12 games, but Liverpool edged a narrow victory to become the first side to take all three points. Subsequent defeats followed against Fulham, Brighton and Hove Albion and Nottingham Forest, before Nordi Mukiele’s deflected strike beat Tottenham Hotspur to halt a run of three home losses.

On home results alone, Arsenal lead with 44 points, with Manchester City and Manchester United on 39 and Aston Villa on 35, while Liverpool have 34. Sunderland sit 12th on 29, level with Newcastle United and Leeds United, and ahead of Chelsea on 23.
