Borussia Dortmund leave it late to take all three points from VfB Stuttgart. In a fiery finale that involved a dispute between Niko Kovac and Sebastian Hoeneß as well as fan unrest, the Black and Yellows copied FC Bayern’s trick.

Similar to the previous few games between the sides, Stuttgart put the visitors under immense pressure in the first 20 minutes. However, Gregor Kobel was hardly troubled with routine saves from Chris Führich and birthday boy Angelo Stiller.

Führich then blasted a free-kick wide from the edge of the box. The energetic winger was also unable to test the Swiss goalkeeper with a powerful half-volley missing the target just before the break.

Fresh from scoring on his debut for Austria, Carney Chukwuemeka had Dortmund’s only chance of the half in injury-time with a tame effort. Niko Kovac’s side started the second-half positively, but the hosts quickly regained control.

Kobel had to be alert to deny Lorenz Assignon ten minutes after the restart. They were still lacking the final pass in Dortmund’s half, though. Kobel had a quiet half despite Stuttgart once again camped inside the opposition half.

Bayern came from two goals down to win in Freiburg with two injury-time strikes earlier today, and Dortmund repeated that feat with three substitutes taking turns. Fabio Silva played a big part in superb finishes by Karim Adeyemi and Julian Brandt.

Dortmund kept the nine-point gap with Bayern, while Sebastian Hoeneß’s side dropped to fourth place with RB Leipzig now in front of them with a better goal difference.

Stuttgart will face HSV next week before another high-profile home fixture against champions-elect FC Bayern. Dortmund face fellow Champions League hopefuls Bayer Leverkusen and TSG Hoffenheim in back-to-back games.
