According to Blick, Yakin said he is in close contact with Xhaka, is not worried about his condition, and will discuss how long he plays.

The 33-year-old recently missed five consecutive matches with an ankle injury, but has returned to start Sunderland’s last two games, including Sunday’s 2-1 win at St James’ Park against Newcastle United.

Switzerland face Germany on Friday, then travel to Norway on Tuesday.

If Xhaka features in both, his cap tally would reach 145. He debuted in 2011, has worn the armband for eight years, and has 16 goals.

Sunderland head coach Regis Le Bris has underlined the midfielder’s impact this season, praising his quality, fit with the club’s identity and commitment in and out of possession. He has highlighted Xhaka’s daily standards and leadership as valuable for a young squad.
