FC Bayern are dominating the Bundesliga and are also putting in impressive performances internationally. Now Hans-Joachim Watzke, a leading figure at Borussia Dortmund of all clubs, has spoken out. His statements show just how much respect there is currently for the Munich team.

Their lead in the league is clear and their performances are consistently strong. Speaking to Sky before Dortmund’s most recent Bundesliga match against HSV (3:2), Watzke had clear words for the record champions. For him, FC Bayern is „currently the best team in Europe“, referring to Munich’s impressive form.

The figures back up this assessment: Bayern are nine points ahead of Dortmund and, in addition to the Bundesliga, are still represented in the DFB Cup and the Champions League. Their international performance in particular left an impression: the German top flight clearly beat Atalanta Bergamo 10:2 in total. Dortmund, of all teams, had previously been defeated by the Italians in the round of 16.

Looking back on these duels, Watzke even became emotional: „I’ve rarely been so happy about Bayern Munich’s victory because it was so clear-cut. That was great,“ he said on Sky.

With regard to Dortmund’s early CL exit, Watzke said: „The season has a flaw, we don’t need to dwell on that“ and added: „Everyone who comes from soccer knows that we had a bad day. It killed us in Bergamo, especially in terms of the dramaturgy.“

In the Bundesliga, on the other hand, Dortmund are stable. Their points haul is one of the best in recent years. Nevertheless, the gap to FC Bayern remains. „The only problem is that Bayern always decide whether you can become German champions or not,“ said Watzke.
