As the VfL Wolfsburg crisis hits its nadir, two names are already being touted for the soon-to-be-vacant club head coaching position. At the very least, it appears as if Wolfsburg head coach Paul Simonis has coached his final Bundesliga match. Simonis will very likely be sacked before the weekend is out. Some front office figures may follow.
Kicker reports that former 1. Union Berlin head coach Urs Fischer and long-time Hamburger SV head coach Tim Walter are candidates to work the Wolfsburg bench. Fischer has remained unemployed since parting company with die Eisernen nearly two years ago in November 2023. Walter was dismissed from Hull City in November 2024.
Walter has yet to catch a German first division side, but brings plenty of 2. Bundesliga experience from his days working in Hamburg, Stuttgart, and Kiel. Fischer led Union Berlin to the first division, the Conference League, the Europa League, and eventually the Champions League. The former Swiss international left Union at the end of a 14 match winless-run two autumns ago.
