FC Bayern have been linked with the signing of Marc Guehi for some time now, and according to the latest reports, the Munich club are now prepared to go on the offensive financially in their pursuit of the England international – and lure him to the Isar with a top salary
At first glance, this development seems surprising. After all, the German record champions currently have the best defence in the Bundesliga. However, the stable figures conceal a structural issue that has occupied the sporting management around Max Eberl and Christoph Freund for months. Internally, the central defence is considered one of the most sensitive areas of the squad – especially with a view to the coming season
One key factor is Dayot Upamecano’s contract situation. The Frenchman’s contract expires in around six months, and talks over an extension have dragged on for a long time. Recently, however, there have been increasing signs that Bayern are prepared to give in on the financial terms in order to keep their defensive boss. An agreement seems more realistic again, although it has not yet been signed
Regardless of this, the future of Minjae Kim remains open. The South Korean hardly plays a sporting role under Vincent Kompany, but with a rumoured annual salary of 15 to 17 million euros, he is one of the top earners in the squad. This discrepancy has long been an issue at Säbener Straße. According to consistent media reports, Bayern are quite prepared to let Kim go early if a suitable offer is made in order to create both sporting and financial leeway

In the event of Kim’s departure, Munich have long since put out feelers – and have apparently identified a clear preferred candidate in Marc Guehi. The 25-year-old from Crystal Palace would be available on a free transfer in the summer of 2026 and is therefore one of the most sought-after defenders on the European market. In addition to FC Bayern, Liverpool FC and FC Barcelona are also said to have their eye on the England international
As reported by Sky, Bayern want to get serious in the new year. Official talks with Guehi are permitted from 1 January, including a possible pre-contract agreement. According to Mundo Deportivo, the talks will not remain non-binding and Munich are prepared to make Guehi a high-paying offer in order to prevail in the competition
Although specific figures are not mentioned, the financial framework can be guessed at. Should Upamecano extend his contract, his salary could be in the region of €20 million per year in the future. With this in mind, it is clear what the dimensions of a potential offer to Guehi would be.
