In a recent report, journalist Graeme Bailey stated that Tottenham Hotspur are planning to move in for Sunderland full-back Dennis Cirkin next year. It has been mentioned that Spurs are eyeing a move to bring the English talent to North London in the January transfer period.

Cirkin’s Impressive Form In English Football

Cirkin enjoyed a good run of form for the Black Cats after he produced a series of impressive displays for them in the EFL Championship. The 23-year-old scored three goals and earned two assists in 39 matches for Sunderland last season across multiple competitions.

The English talent performed his defensive duties well as he made 92 tackles, 40 blocks, 43 interceptions and 103 clearances in the EFL Championship. He was even tidy when distributing possession, based on his pass success rate of 77.2% in the second tier of English football (stats via fbref.com).

His current contract at Sunderland will run out at the end of this campaign. Thus, Spurs could potentially snap him up on a free transfer next summer.

Should Tottenham Hotspur Boss Thomas Frank Recruit Cirkin?

Cirkin is a solid tackler of the ball and can sense the danger well to earn possession back for his team inside his half. He doesn’t mind putting his foot through the ball when the opposition are on the offensive. Cirkin is primarily a left-back but can also function as a central defender if told to do so.

The English talent has already shown what he can do for Sunderland in the Premier League this season. Thus, he won’t take much time to adjust to life at Tottenham.

We can expect Cirkin to bring more quality to Spurs head coach Thomas Frank’s defence. Plus, he is on an expiring contract, which makes him an affordable option for the North London club to pursue next summer.

At 23, Cirkin has got the ceiling to be a future star in English football. Thus, Spurs would be wise to go all out to recruit him this January or at the end of this campaign. The English sensation could even help Tottenham compete across all fronts in the coming seasons. All in all, it makes sense for Frank to lure Cirkin to North London next year.
